The Novice Sweater is knitted top down. This means you start with the neckline, then the yoke, then the body, and finally the sleeves. The sweater is worked in stockinette stitch, but the edges are worked in a rib pattern.

The Novice Sweater has a round yoke. This is created by knitting increases during the knitting process—four rounds evenly spaced across the yoke.
